The BSc in Economic and Social Sciences is a program in economics with a solid quantitative foundation and a rich interdisciplinary nature. With its mix of economic, quantitative and social sciences tools, this innovative program brings different perspectives on leading international economic issues.

The program prepares students to understand economic and social phenomena using mathematical models and statistical techniques.

Our students learn to predict the future evolution of employment, growth, inflation, globalization, development and inequality, and to understand the interaction between crime, health conditions, climate, and economic and social outcomes. The approach to these topics is highly quantitative with a combination of logic, statistics, mathematics, econometrics, microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, and the applications of these techniques in the field.

Another strong suit of the program, which differentiates it from other economics programs worldwide, is the expansion and integration of the economic model of human behavior with knowledge from other social sciences. The study program includes cognitive sciences, social psychology, history and sociology courses, which explain how economic decisions are also affected by emotions, cognitive limitations, cultural values and social norms.

This BSc is ideal for students with an international vocation and an ambitious intellectual disposition: its quantitative training offers a method easily transferable to many different work environments and allows graduates to solve decision-making problems with a broader vision. The program prepares students for a higher level of specialization with an MSc or a career in economic consulting, governmental and non-governmental institutions, or research.

Salvatore Nunnari

What is the likely effect of Artificial Intelligence on labor markets and inequality? Why are tech giants under the close scrutiny of antitrust agencies around the globe? How can we achieve the goal of making our society more sustainable in the long run and what are the pros and cons of current policies? What are the welfare effects of social media? What are the implications of ageing societies? What are the benefits of belonging to the EU or adopting the Euro? What are the benefits and costs of globalization? Why are some countries unable to escape the poverty trap?

This Bachelor of Science tackles these and many more questions. You will discover how theoretical models – simplified representations of complex phenomena – are designed to understand logical connections and cause-effect relationships among the variables affecting the economic and social environment.

The program’s multidisciplinary approach blends the study of models describing ideal rational economic behavior with an analysis of real-world behavior, allowing you to grasp an increasingly sophisticated set of economic and social issues.
